The usual framing of this comparison is length — microlearning is short, an LMS is long. That's a symptom rather than the difference, and it leads people to conclude they can get microlearning by chopping up their existing courses. They mostly can't.
The real difference is directional.
Pull versus push
A traditional LMS is a destination. Courses live in a catalogue, learners log in, browse, enrol, and work through material. The model assumes the learner arrives — that they're motivated, or scheduled, or told to be there.
Microlearning tools invert that assumption. They assume the learner will not come, and deliver to wherever the learner already is: a chat app, SMS, a phone. Nothing is browsed. Material is pushed, in pieces small enough to complete without a decision.
Everything else follows from this. Short modules exist because pushed content has to fit into a gap rather than a scheduled block. Quizzes are brief because there's no session to fill. Catalogues are absent because nobody is browsing.
Where each model is genuinely better
A traditional LMS is better when learning is voluntary or self-directed. If people are choosing to develop a skill, a catalogue is exactly right — they browse, pick, and pace themselves. Pushing modules at someone pursuing their own goal is just interruption.
It's also better for external audiences. Customers and partners have to come to you; you can't push into their workspace. And it's better when you need standards support — SCORM, xAPI, AICC — because purchased content libraries almost universally ship in those formats.
Microlearning is better when training is mandatory. Onboarding, policies, compliance, process changes: things people wouldn't seek out, that nonetheless need to be completed and recorded. Here the pull model fails predictably, because the assumption it rests on — that the learner shows up — is false.
The completion gap is structural
This is why "our LMS has low completion" is such a common complaint and such a hard one to fix from inside the LMS.
The platform is well built. The content is fine. But the model requires someone to notice a notification, follow a link, authenticate, find the course, and start — and every one of those steps loses people who had no intrinsic reason to be there. No improvement to the portal addresses the fact that reaching it is the problem.
Published microlearning completion figures reflect the difference: SC Training reports an 82% average completion rate on microlessons averaging five minutes, and Arist states above 90% for its bite-sized lessons. Those numbers come substantially from removing the journey, not from better content.
What microlearning gives up
Being fair about the cost:
- No catalogue, so no self-directed discovery.
- No SCORM, so purchased libraries generally can't be used.
- Limited external reach — you can't push into a customer's workspace.
- Less depth. Genuinely complex material that requires sustained connected reasoning suffers when fragmented.
- Less authoring control — most of these tools trade design flexibility for speed.
If your training is a customer academy, a professional certification, or a genuinely deep technical curriculum, a traditional LMS is correct and the completion argument doesn't apply.
Most companies need both eventually
The common end state isn't one or the other. It's a traditional LMS for anything self-directed, external-facing, or purchased, and a microlearning tool for mandatory internal training.
They're not really competing. They serve opposite assumptions about whether the learner shows up, and most companies have both kinds of training.
